Over the past months, there has been drama. There have been macros. There has been bitchfacing that Mary McDonnell herself can't compete with.

There have been cookies.

And now, there is a winner.

The three judges - [info]still_might_be, [info]lily_winterwood, and [info]averita - have posted their individual thoughts, and after much name-calling, bitterness, and irreversibly destroyed friendships, they have come to a conclusion. Two of the three judges are satisfied, and even [info]still_might_be appears to have grudgingly accepted the results[info]still_might_be is an angry, bitter crone who doesn't play nicely with other ladies. The competition was fierce, the scores were close, and at long last...

Ladies and no gentlemen, I present to you the winner of America's Next Top Iron Chef: Fangirl Island ... )

NOTE: The Head Judge refuses to participate in the creation of this entry* on the grounds that her co-judges are shallow, dimwitted Philistines with tastebuds wired to their eyes and not to their palates. They decide based on packaging, like those people who pay for Evian mineral water facial spray. These idiots would FAIL to recognize Laura Roslin's awesomeness if it met them on a dark night. [info]averita even admitted outright: "I also think that [info]meryl_edan is more likely to destroy me if I vote against her." Cowards! Head Judge doesn't know what gods she pissed off that her high culinary discernment should be forced to associate with such misfits.

* A message of hate does not count as participation. Don't argue semantics with her... your health is a precious thing.

I encourage everyone to look at [info]still_might_be’s cookie post for her indescribably brilliant fandom-cookie comparisons. There’s no way for me to top that, so I’m going to go with a more scientific look at things!

Upon receiving [info]meryl_edan’s cookies last Wednesday, I was very impressed with the pink tissue paper, gold seals, and overall classy presentation. As tempting as the goodies were, I stashed them away in the refrigerator, covered in post-its warning my family not to eat on pain of death. When [info]lavenderseaslug’s package arrived the next day, with my name written on it in cute blue bubble letters, I didn’t wait long to tear into it.

After carefully arranging the six types of cookies on the table and making the tea that [info]meryl_edan had thoughtfully provided to go along with her Earl Grey Tea Cookies, I dove in. My brothers, just home from school, selflessly volunteered to help. They had one of each cookie (or one half of the larger varieties) and gave the following critique: "These rock. Your friends are awesome."

The final tallies, based on a judging criteria that took into account appearance, taste, texture, and the overall average, make the final decision difficult. [info]meryl_edan’s Gingerbread White Chocolate Blondie came in first, with an overall score of 8.7, closely followed by [info]lavenderseaslug’s Spritz Cookie with an 8.6. [info]lavenderseaslug’s Chocolate Chip Cookie beat out [info]meryl_edan’s by .2 points in the “control” category. [info]meryl_edan’s average score was 8.3, just above [info]lavenderseaslug’s 8.1.

See here [info]meryl_edan's selection. On top, we have the Earl Grey Tea Cookie with Earl Grey Tea. Below, see the Chocolate Chip Cookie and the winning Gingerbread White Chocolate Blondie.

[info]lavenderseaslug presented us with the Chocolate Molasses Cookie (on top), her Chocolate Chip Cookie, and the famed and delicious Spritz Cookie.

The entire selection.

The winner will be announced tonight, on this very page. Stay tuned!

Hey everyone! I have a huge favor to ask - I'm working on my senior project, a 10 page long research paper on a topic of our choice. I thought it would be fun to explore fandom and online friendships, and would love it if you guys could fill out this short questionaire. Be as detailed as you like, and if there are questions you don't want to or can't answer, feel free to skip them! All comments will be screened. You can also PM or email me.

Thanks in advance :)

Questions! )

Just watched Glee. Oh my God, so amazing. I missed it last night because Jayne Atkinson takes priority - speaking of which, how awesome did she look for the whole minute of screen time she had? - but wow. Sue Sylvester, marry me.

Almost weekend, yay!

The moderator of the BSG panel was Faith Salie. I’m not quite sure who she is, but she was enthusiastic. She introduced each panel member: Ron Moore, who was quarterback in high school AND played in the band; David Eick, who says that Comic Con is the one day a year he feels lime a member of the Beatles; Jane Espenson, who wrote a MASH script at age thirteen and thinks that rum tastes like suntan lotion; Esai Morales, who does a great Adama imitation; and Edward James Olmos, who I don’t believe got a special introduction beyond Oscar-winner. Eddie immediately called his godchildren up, he didn’t want them to have to sit in the back: “Get up here, amigo!”

More under the cut. )

All in all, another very good day!

Also: a brief clip of the 24 panel can be found here. The files are huge and taking forever to upload so I'll get them done as soon as possible, but they'll probably be trickling out for the next couple of days.

SO much fun today. I'm in the hotel room now waiting on room service and then a hot shower - my feet are falling off! But so worth it.

We woke up around 6:15 tomorrow and hung out in line till about 7:45, when they started letting us in. Carter (my little brother) went straight to try and get into Hall H - he wanted to see most of the panels in there - but some Twihards had been camped out in tents since Tuesday at midnight. Seriously. So he didn't get in until after that was over. I stood in line to get into the Exhibit Hall with a really sweet woman, Anjie. We hung out for about an hour while waiting. Her husband - the reason she was at the convention - joined us after parking, and Carter joined us after realizing he wouldn't get into Hall H. Chris and Anjie were here for Lost, so we talked about that, and about Harry Potter, Twilight, school - she teaches high school math - and a lot of things. Some people are just really easy going and friendly, and she was one of them. That was a great way to start the day.

When we got in, it was so huge and confusing that I had no idea where to go, so I wandered around. Bought a "Frak Earth" t-shirt and browsed. It was fun but kind of terrifying, not gonna lie. I met up with [info]own_the_sky and her friend Kelly at the Astro-Boy panel (Kristen Bell! I don't know much about her but she was adorable) and we went to the Middlemen panel, with Mark Sheppard. It was hilarious. That man is hysterical.

After that was the BSG Retrospective panel, which opened with a video in which cast members, both old and new, as well as Glenn Larson and David Eick talked about the show. Mary was in it - looking fine - and I have a video of her talking, I'll post that when I upload it. She didn't say anything too new, talked about the relevence of the show today, but I always love hearing her talk.

Rest cut for length )

Straight after that I went to Luciana Carro's autograph table. She was adorable and so sweet. There was only one person in front of me and from what I heard of their conversation, Kat was made to look even worse in The Passage, stealing food from kids and stuff. She wasn't thrilled with that, but I guess they changed it. Anyway, I took a picture with her and got her to sign a photo.

Then it was down to the SDCC Official Pix Booth, which I had finally found on a map, to find James Callis, Michael Hogan, and EJO. )

What they all wrote:

"Avery - Good Hunting! ♥ Luciana 'Kat'"

"Avery. Frak Em All! Hogan 'XO'"

"Dear Avery - Baltar's Babes Live 4 Ever! Love James Callis." (LOLLLL.

"Avery, We Both Love You...'So Say We All!' Edward James Olmos 'Admiral Adama' 7-23-09."

I love this cast ♥ SO FRAKKING MUCH.

Then I went to get in line for Elizabeth Mitchell, who was going to be at the WB booth signing autographs for V. It was a long wait but I made friends with the guy in front of me, and we killed the time talking about Lost. We could see when she came out because there were cameras broadcasting it in the tent type thing we were waiting in. She was adorable - seriously. She looked beautiful and it just blew my mind how sweet and active and completely engaged she was with everyone she talked to. When we got up close enough to see her in person it was amazing how young she looked, too - could easily pass for her early 20s.

More about Elizabeth Mitchell, and a picture. )

Finally, I went to the FOX booth to get tickets for the 24 autograph session tomorrow. It was complete chaos and really disorganized, no discernable line and definitely no end to the line; if I hadn't gotten tickets because of the mess I would have been really pissed, but I did, so it's all good.

ETA: Totally forgot! On my way out of the Exhibit Hall I saw Michael Taylor, and stopped him to say that Unfinished Business is one of my favorite episodes and thank him for coming. So that was cool.

And that's it. I'm back at the hotel, and going to bed any minute because I'm going to get up ridiculously early to get into the BSG and 24 panels. On the whole, a great first day.

Here's the final product! For those of you at [info]mary_mcawesome, you've most of these drabbles, but I finally finished the little project. In honor of Mary's birthday I wrote 100 words for 11 of my favorite characters of hers, like I did a couple of years ago for Sarah Clarke. Mary's played a lot of incredible women so I didn't get to touch on them all, but hopefully you'll enjoy those that I did. A big thank you to those that have commented already! Title is taken from "Be Careful", by Patty Griffin.

Halloween pictures :)

Guess who I am! Guess, guess!

That took 70 hairpins, btw. I don't have bangs.

A few more )

We had a pretty awesome time. Ate two trays of sushi, watched scary movies, fought over who got to give the little kids candy, wound up sprawled around the house as we fell asleep in various places...we wandered the neighborhood a bit. I live in a very conservative subdivision - on my street, there are two Obama/Biden signs (including ours) and at least 20 McCain/Palin - and then there are three that just say 'Sarah!' in huge letters. (We visited all three of those houses.) We hung out at my friend Jeremy's for awhile, and just basically had a good time. I love these guys :)

I hope everyone else had a good Halloween! I know I'm not the only Sarah Palin on my friends list, so it's been fun looking at pictures of you guys :) I got plenty of comments at school, even though I didn't have bangs then, just a half-assed bun (I can't do my own hair, it's insane.) The librarians were dressed up as Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain, and I know them both pretty well - actually I supplemented Ms. Polley's costume with some of my Obama pins/bracelets/etc. - and they took a picture with me, so that was fun. Only problem was that I couldn't find pink devil horns, and even if I had, by the time I had my hair done I wasn't about to risk messing it up. Anyone who knew me got it, I guess.

The accent? Did not happen. Hybrid southern/chiCAgo, with a very loud voice and strange emphasis on words. I gave up on that pretty quickly.

Two days. It's strange - I'm literally a knot of nerves but at the same time, over the past two or three weeks I've started becoming indifferent to pretty much everything...maybe thickening my skin or something, I don't know. I can't imagine anything past Tuesday night, no matter what the outcome is...my mom, however, has a weekly appointment with our therapist every Wednesday morning. I imagine that can't hurt, this week.

Quick question - I'd love to hear responses anytime, just for interest, but the presentation is tomorrow. So if anyone can respond to this, I'd appreciate it! (I'm not a procrastinator, it just occured to me that this would be a fun addition to what I already have planned.)

Anyway, tomorrow I'm doing a presentation on Fanfiction at NOCCA - which, as some of you may know, is a prestigious writing program that focuses on high quality literature (i.e. one of my teachers has not only not read Harry Potter, but is incredibly derisive towards fanfiction in general, though I doubt she knows much about it.) So I thought I'd get some feedback from those who read it.

Here's a little questionaire, if that would be easier, or you can just ramble. All questions are optional, but would be helpful. Some are N/A, depending on your answers to others.

Name:
Age:
Occupation:
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Name some of your favorite books:
What fandoms are you currently involved in?
How does fandom enhance your experience? Does it?
Do you write fanfiction? Why or why not?
Do you write original fiction? If not, why fanfiction? If so, does writing fanfiction help with your original work?
In what ways do you think writing fanfiction is easier than writing original fiction? In what ways can it be harder?
Has writing fanfiction made you consider writing original fiction in ways you hadn't before?
What do you look for in a quality fanfiction?
Why do you think that it has become such a huge part of fandom?
What are some issues you have with fanfiction?
What genres do you prefer? Do ships make a difference in what you read?
Any final thoughts?

Any recommendations would be great as well, either fics or articles about fanfiction.

I'd like to crosspost this to some HP communities (I'm focusing mainly on HP because it's a series everyone in my class is familiar with, and I can certainly talk about that particular fandom for, like, a college semester) but few of them are very high quality. (This is NOT to say that if you're not familiar with the HP fandom that I don't want you to fill this out - variety is great.) But if any of you guys want to pass this on to people you know/trust in the next few hours, feel free!

You can comment here, or email me at aberaboo@msn.com. I'll leave this post open to the public.

As I was saying, I've been rocking the whole nostalgic thing lately!

Rising )

Written right after Gustav.

Seventh Grade: Vegetarian on Dissection Day )

Sleeping )

We visited Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii in 2007 (I talk about it a bit here - scroll down to June 11), so that inspired this.

Traitor: A Reprise )

*cuddles Nina* This is a sequal of sorts to Interrogator, which I wrote last year. I'm not happy with this one yet.

This is due tomorrow, so suggestions/feedback are always welcome, but especially for the next few hours!

Public entry, so real life friends can see it.

Title: Innocent Faces
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Through Exodus 2
Summary: 'It’s almost disconcerting, she wrote in one letter to Bill, both the normality and the wrongness of it.'
A/N: Fic for [info]redoren over at [info]adama_roslin's Christmas in July exchange. She requested a Roslin fic set on New Caprica.

Laura missed a lot of things, those long months in space. )

My lip is no longer taking over my face! Now it's more Angelina Jolie-like than anything, which I'm okay with. It's pretty chapped though, and the inside of the lip as well, because it was exposed to dry air for so long. I'm on a cocktail of meds, which seems to be helping. I went to the allergist today and he thinks that all of this is somehow related to the mono, because they started at the same time - itchy legs, random swellings and hives, etc. It could be that the mono triggered something, or that it weakened my immune system and something else triggered it. Anyway, we'll see what else happens with that.

My brother's birthday was on Tuesday. He's a teenager now! He's obsessed with Batman right now, the Joker in particular, so he got mostly action figures and about 10 Joker t-shirts. He's having his birthday party tonight, a few friends in a hotel room. They went and saw The Dark Knight. Go figure. My other brother and I went in on some video game (I just paid, I don't know the first thing about video games!) Christoffer (brother 2) has his birthday in September but I ordered him a gift about a month ago because it was too good to pass up. Tricia Helfer has a store on her website where you can get personalized autographs, and the money goes to an animal rescue charity. (Have I mentioned that she's awesome?) Christoffer loves Six, so I got him an autograph wishing him a happy birthday.

We're leaving for Maine on Saturday! :)

Title: Life For The Living

Summary: A thank you to [info]_ila_ for the lovely header and the yummy 6/9 goodies she's been providing me! *hugs* She spoils me, seriously. I was working on a Caprica/Nina Earth!fic, but that didn't really go anywhere, so this is attempt number 2. [info]_ila_ just made my day!

This was inspired first by Number Nine, and then more recently by this little ficlet I wrote for her, here. )

I'm going to be so depressed when the actual Number 9 is revealed. This is a fun crackship!

If anyone wants to pass on any further fic ideas, go for it, because I want to write them but can't come up with anything that isn't ridiculously smutty. The 6/9 pairing was SO not intentional but it isn't helping.

Mmm, now I want a Six/Nine icon. (And I CAN'T TYPE NINE. I KEEP TYPING NINA. BOO.)

And while we're talking about Nina - Sarah Clarke is MY hero.

TM: Who are your heroes? Why?

Sarah: Anyone who is crusading to help the environment. Because even though it is getting more politically correct to care about the earth.there are still only a handful of people who are actually making a difference and changing the way we think about ourselves and our relationship to the planet.

This girl is GOLD.

- Greg Itzin live is hardcore. And imagining Jeannie clucking like a chicken was a ton of fun. (Would have been more fun to SEE Jeannie clucking like a chicken, but I'm not bitter or anything.) There were these scenes with Jean's character bantering back and forth with Greg's and in a way it's so good that she had to drop out because we would have been dead a few million times over.

- This Greek place we went to - I don't think I've ever eaten that much in my life. There are still leftovers at Alice's place, two days and many servings later.

- Hollywood! WE FOUND EJO'S STAR ON THE WALK OF FAME. It was brilliant. [info]firstlady1408 put her "I Love Laura" pin in the 'O' in 'Olmos' and we took about a million pictures, LMAO. We got one of me in my 'Roslin/Airlock 08' t-shirt lined up with it too. This group of guys walked by and looked at us like we were crazy, lying all over it. I wonder if they knew who he is, that would make it even more bizarre, I'm sure.

- Watching 'Six of One' with actual BSG addicts! And squeeing over a certain scene with [info]firstlady1408 - and not discussing it with [info]tallulah2 and [info]lostonbroadway, hee. For that matter, Jess and I had more live squeefests over the course of two days than I think I've ever had in my life.

- Watching Samantha Who? on a GIANT ASS TV. This week's episode ranks right up there with the car one. Drunk!Jean is pretty much kickass. And she can do angsty Martha drunk and hilarious Regina drunk and I CRY BOTH TIMES, but for different reasons. Plus, she pulls off the garish hooker makeup.

- Photofests all weekend long! I don't have a camera so I'm counting on everyone else to upload theirs (hinthint)

- THE CONCERT. HOLY SHIT. We got in line around seven (I wore my Roslin/Airlock t-shirt again) and it was like a fandom heaven. I've never been around so many BSG fans! Technically I've never been around ANY hardcore BSG fans in real life. We spent about an hour in line just talking with people. Jess and I were going freaking crazy, LMAO. I recognized [info]aka_katya from a picture she posted on [info]battlestar_blog so we went and said hi to her and pretty much spent the whole night together, hee. We were right up front!

- Bear McCreary is a freaking musical genius, and his brother is hot. One of the first pieces played was the Adama and Roslin theme, and Jess and I went freaking crazy. It's SO PRETTY LIVE OMG. Like, I had shivers. (Through most of the songs, actually, but this one in particular!) There was this couple standing by us and they were like "Oh, god, these are the fangirls, aren't they?" and Jess turned and said "Yes, we are!" Hee, it was great.

- James Callis is amazing. Everyone went crazy when he came out, of course. He was dressed in this little pinstriped vest thing, a white shirt, and tight black pants! He was very nice and totally hilarious. At one point my dad went to the bathroom and RAN INTO HIM. Towards the end, during the encore, we noticed him standing on this balcony and completely rocking out and clapping like a fangirl to the music. It was fantastic. And he SANG. He played this song he wrote on the keyboard (the band played as well) and sang this song called "Spooky". I'm pretty sure Michelle recorded it, so it'll be up at some point. James compared playing for Bear as the guy who invented Chopsticks playing for Beethoven. It was brilliant, I don't remember the last time I've laughed so hard.

- Wait, yes I do. They played a video/documentary type thing:
The Secrets of
Behind the Scenes of
The Making of
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
(Revealed)

It reminded me of David Eick's "Billy Gets No Respect." It starts with Bear trying to get into the s2 wrap party but no one knows who he is. Then it cuts to clips of the production staff: "Music? What music?" "Oh, yeah, Stu [Philips] is awesome! No one could ever replace him." "What, you mean the Bob Dylan thing?"

Then Bear goes to James Callis' house to interview him. James opens the door in a BSG bathrobe (LOL) and is like "Who are you? How did you get my address?" Then they talk for a few minutes and James is like, "Yeah, I have a song that Ron's dying for me to play on the show. A theme or something." So he goes and shows Bear the music, and Bear plays on the piano while James warms up his vocal chords - which was hilarious - and sings in this operatic soprano voice "Gaius Baltar..." and then starts kind of headbanging "is a motherfucking genius." Bear is like WTF? and James says "Oh, yeah, it really should be motherfrakking, shouldn't it? Hee!

Then the writers - Jane Espenson says "Oh, yeah, it's wonderful. I've never worked on a show with wild animals before." Hee! Then she starts talking about circus music.

The best part, of course, were the cast interviews. It started with Jamie Bamber who was like "Who? What? I have no idea what you're talking about, sorry." The interviewer just tells him to lie and Jamie says "Okay - um, American or British?" Then it cuts to him in an American accent saying "Oh, yeah, Bear is fantastic. The show wouldn't be what it is without him, and without his music," or something like that - just raving about Bear. Then he stops and says in his British accent "Was that okay?"

Katee does pretty much the same thing, raves and then says "Does that sound too fake? I don't want it to sound fake, should I try again?" She was adorable - and NOT THERE. She was supposed to be at the concert! :( When the interviewer goes to someone else she says "You know, you really need to stop putting us on the spot like this. No one knows who the hell this guy is."

EDDIE AND MICHAEL. HOLY SHIT. BEST THING EVER. They're talking - in uniform - outside a trailer, laughing and everything, and then the interviewer asks about Bear and the music, and Eddie just kind of smiles and goes "Music? Battlestar doesn't have any music!" Michael looks all annoyed and the interviewer keeps saying "You know, Bear, Bear McCreary!" And - this is the part where I died - Eddie kind of cracks up and IMITATES A FREAKING BEAR. He does the paws and this weirdass half growl/half MOO thing. He does it like three times. It was GENIUS. Then, later, he says "You know, that's so cute that they call him Bear." My dad recorded it, it'll probably be bad quality but I'll try to post it later.

No Mary. Boo.

Cut to Bear, who's all depressed about not getting into the wrap party. He puts his head down on the desk, his hair all over his face, and then: "One Season Later." Everyone cracked up, LMAO. It was awesome.

- All Along the Watchtower - I was shaking. Hearing that live was unbelievable.

- After the band bowed and left, the crowd clapped for about five minutes, and then, suddenly, "So Say We All!" started. I WAS PART OF A SO SAY WE ALL. Never thought that would happen. It lasted for a good while, too! They finally came out for an encore. By the end of it I was barely standing but it was such an amazing time.

- After the concert, my dad and Alice took off, but Jess, Leigh Anne, Michelle, Leanne, Katya, and I stayed. We waited in line for a good while and got to talk to James Callis! We told him where we were all from (England, Texas, Louisiana, and Australia) and he just stares at us and says "Fuck." Hee! He was very sweet, took a picture with all of us. When the camera was about to go off he says "This is Baltar's dream come true!" SLKJFSA. The pic was actually adorable, Jess is going to upload it when she gets back home. He said he liked my shirt, he could only see the front, so I turned around and showed him the back and he and Bear both cracked up and James gave me a peace sign, LMAO. Bear asked if it was us who went crazy at the A/R theme and we were like, there's a slight possibility.

- So the concert was amazing, but of course the total highlight was seeing everyone. I'd never met Jess or Leanne before, and they're both fantastic (and have fun accents!) Jess and I spent most of the weekend in a state of fangirl squee, which was a blast, because when I try to squee with anyone in real life that doesn't work out too well, hee. Leigh Anne and Michelle are always so sweet and great to see, and Alice is just a saint for putting us all up. It was the most fun I've had in a long, long time. We're planning our next trip to Tennessee in September for a certain convention!

- And now, I have a shitload of homework that I really should have been doing instead of spamming your flists. Pictures/videos to come.
